It’s been said that Sheep Mountain was named after sheep from nearby mining camps who would often come to graze on what little grass there was during their stopover between Tonopah and Goldfield. In 1877, a surveyor found some silver ore while he was surveying for a railroad line near present-day Kelso Dunes which led to an influx of miners into this area.
