Historic Westside School

Ninety-five years ago, the Westside School District was established in Las Vegas to provide education for children who lived west of Charleston Boulevard. This school district is still in existence today and serves an area that includes much of the city’s western side, including its downtown and most of its residential areas.

The first public schools were typical one room buildings where grades K through 8 were taught by a single teacher. The only exception was at McKinley Elementary School which had two rooms. To accommodate these students, the district built new campuses with multiple classrooms on each site during the 1930s and 1940s.
